Artist Statement

Through the use of vibrant colors and bold, gestural brushstrokes, my work seeks to convey a sense of movement and dynamism, evoking the feeling of living organisms. I seek to push the boundaries of what is possible with them in order to create something truly unique and surreal.

I use the technique of automatism to lay out the composition. I then use my knowledge of line and color to refine areas of the work to get it to a stage that is aesthetically pleasing.

In my art, I explore the connection between the conscious and the unconscious, the physical and the emotional, isolation and connectedness, and the empty space between. Biomorphic shapes are used to express emotions and feelings, creating a link between the human and non-human world.

Bio

Tori is a contemporary surrealist artist from Durham, North Carolina. Though oil painting is her primary medium when she is not painting she dabbles in digital art and VJing. Her most recent work focuses on organic biomorphic shapes and creatures using the automatic drawing technique. She gains inspiration from her perception of the world and personal experiences. She ponders the complexity of raw expression and seeks to confront them, as I aim to use biomorphic creatures and forms to portray these concepts.

Her work can be found on the online art streaming site Loupe. Her work has been displayed at multiple local group art exhibits and art markets throughout the years including the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC, and Bedford Gallery in California.
