Cathy Carter

Cathy Carter

Cathy Carter is a photographic and multimedia conceptual artist, based in Grey Lynn, Auckland. Her art is inspired by concerns about climate change and our evolving relationship with bodies of water as we enter the Anthropocene. My art practice explores bodies of water as physical, cultural, and unique environmental ‘landscapes’ and investigates our complex psychological relationship to water through different perspectives and geographical locations.

Carter is a graduate of AUT University with a Master of Art and Design (Hons) 2013. A finalist this year in the Molly Morpeth 3D Art Awards, 2020. A finalist in the Parkins Drawing Prize, 2019. A four-times finalist in the Wallace Art Awards (2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2014), and the international HeadOn Phortography Prize (2019, 2018, 2016 and 2015). And a finalist in the 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 Walker and Hall Waiheke Art Prize. Carter’s work has been exhibited in artist-run, dealer and public art galleries including Carter’s work has been exhibited in artist-run, dealer and public art galleries including The Auckland Art Gallery, Auckland, the Academy Galleries, Wellington, Percy Thompson in Taranaki, Muse art gallery in Hawkes Bay, The Suter Art gallery in Nelson, HeadOn Sydney, Moaroom Paris, 'Breathtaking': inSPIRACJE12 @TrafoSczcecin Poland, Manifest Gallery Cincinnati Ohio and Photoville in Brooklyn NYC and in 2021 'Almost Paradise' Duolun Museum of Modern Art in Shanghai. Her work is held in many

collections including The Wallace Arts Trust and The Parliament Art Collection.

Through the use of different perspectives Carter seeks to embody seeing as an experience rather than solely as observation. As spaces of isolation and destabilisation, the bodies of water depicted in her work offer sensuous and psychologically-compelling encounters, and explore human vulnerability in these environments, as well as the vulnerability of our oceans and waterways at this time in history.
